Under general supervision of a higher level officer, Registered Nurses (RNs) duties are to promote good health and prevent illness. RNs educate patients, prisoners and the public about various medical conditions, treat patients and help in their rehabilitation, and provide advice and emotional support to patients' families. They use considerable judgment in providing a wide variety of services.

The employees in this position are also assigned responsibilities for providing direct or indirect professional nursing services in a variety of settings. This includes providing nursing assessments, planning, interventions, evaluations, health related education, case management, and execution of the medical regime including. Administrating medications and treatments prescribed by any person authorized to prescribe by territorial law.

Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE):

  • Assesses health status of individuals, families, and communities; develops plans and implements appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Evaluates and determines health resources necessary to meet individual, family and community health needs.
  • Delivers professional nursing care in an assigned unit, clinic, home, or other setting.
  • Educates individuals, families, communities, and members of the health care team about the principles of disease prevention and health promotion.
  • Provides supervision to other professional or paraprofessional personnel; collaborates with other professionals in the management of health care.
  • Delegate's tasks as may safely be performed by others, consistent with educational preparation and that do not conflict with the provisions of the Virgin Islands Board of Nursing.
  • Assures quality health care through use of various measures such as record review, peer review, direct observation, and assessment of individual, family, and community for the desired outcome.
  • Performs specialized nursing functions as educationally prepared.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing.

OR

An Associate's Degree in Nursing and two (2) years working experience in nursing or health care related work.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid Virgin Islands License as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Virgin Islands Board of Nurses.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional nursing, of health promotions and disease prevention.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, and techniques, of health and disease prevention.
  • Knowledge of nursing management of available health care resources.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and diet therapy, and of the functions of various clinical departments.
  • Knowledge of available health programs and resources of federal and territorial rules and regulations concerning health services; of accreditation, certification and licensure standards.
  • Ability to perform assessments and nursing functions as acquired in the basic nursing preparation program.
  • Ability to assist in the development organization and implementation of an effective nursing care plan.
  • Ability to provide education and training.
  • Ability to assess condition and needs of patients, families and communities appropriate to the care setting.
  • Ability to counsel and teach patients and families, and to provide direction or guidance to non-licensed personnel in assigned area of responsibility to ensure quality care.
FACTOR 2 - SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Registered Nurses receive supervision from directors and keeps records of symptoms and progress. They are general for the most part and focus on the overall care of patients. They can also specialize by work setting or type of treatment provided. Work is reviewed through reports submitted and conferences to discuss the issues and concerns.
FACTOR 3 – GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include standard operating procedures relative to the area of nursing, agencies with regards to patients' inmates, federal policies and procedures and action required by the institution as mandated by its standing operating procedures.
FACTOR 4 – COMPLEXITY:
This is highly complex position coupled with professional and technical assignments and a substantial degree of responsibility and independence in planning, organizing, and completing work. The individual must be committed to the implementation of policies and procedures that are specific to the medical area and the individual he/she cares for.
FACTOR 5 - SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to perform professional nursing duties at furl performance level. Resulting in performing a full range of duties in monitoring and assessing the health status of individuals, families and population as well as defining a plan of care and providing nurse case management and health education when necessary.
FACTOR 6 - PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Contacts are made with co-workers clients, family members, community groups, general public and the institution representatives.
FACTOR 7 - PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contacts are made to gather and exchange information, and to provide service to clients and others in the institution under the care of a physician.
FACTOR 8 - PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work involves exposure to hazardous diseases, unpleasant situations, unpleasant odors and standing or concentration for long periods of time. This may require lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
FACTOR 9 - WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Working conditions may vary with the place of employment; however, nearly all nursing jobs involve close contacts with people. Work environment may also require working in a hospital or other facilities with exposure to potentially dangerous or hazardous diseases.
